Annals: Year 17
A story fragment and codex entry from the Dustsong Cycle—and more
From the Annals of the Vaporous Realms
In the midst of the wandering wastes, east of the lesser Fangs, three hunters met at the entrance to a jackal's den. Together they slew the beasts therein. These desert-folk and their kin made a pact in blood—either their own or, as some later claimed, that of a jackal. Other wanderers joined their clan, who came to call themselves the Sand Folk.
Codex: Sand Folk
The Sand Folk were the largest of the desert-folk clans early in the first epoch. The Bone Jackal clan originated as an offshoot of the Sand Folk.
The Sand Folk were second among the thirteen clans that followed Len Ghremson out of the wandering wastes. They initially settled in the south quarter of Danoh-town, but within a few generations, their semi-nomadic instincts reasserted themselves. Their descendants intermarried with those of several other clans to become the knoll-folk.
Author Note
It would’t be December if I didn’t share Michael John Petty’s pre-Christmas musings, this time on “The Joy of Christmas.” May we all enjoy our seasonal traditions, including those that aren’t expressly biblical, while minding the posture of our heart.
On a more mundane note, here’s the misfortunate Young Beard’s new Vaporous Realms at War profile.
Bless y’all! Merry Christmas—and happy reading.
