Several months later—

Sweaty trails streaked the weary, sun-wrinkled face of the barbarian chief who knelt before Len. The man’s green eyes shifted, uncertain, from Len to Egwae and back again as he mumbled a stream of guttural phrases with hardly a pause.

Beside Len, his spirit warden looked down at the barbarian with seeming disinterest but translated for him, anyway. “Of the man who bears the sign he has heard,” Egwae drawled, “as well as what befalls those who stand in his path. The Children of the Sunset Dunes, his clan-folk call themselves, and they will follow where you lead.”
