Before long, Len noticed the slope of the mountainside gentling and becoming grassier. A clump of diminutive pear trees drew him to a green spot that was fairly flat. When he saw they bore fruit, he decided to pause there for a respite. For the next while, he plucked the more promising-looking specimens, munching on some and stowing others in his pockets.
