Legion
A unit of military organization from the Eastsong Cycle
A legion was the largest tactical unit of armies associated with the kingdom of Danuh, from the Third Epoch onward. A full legion comprised seven battalions, or 2,400 soldiers including auxiliary and support troops, under the command of a legionary prefect.
Each battalion, in turn, comprised seven companies (343 soldiers), led by a commander. A company comprised seven sevens (49 soldiers), led by the senior subaltern among those sevens.
Any given legion might be a mix of heavy and light infantry, heavy and light dragoons (mounted infantry), light cavalry, camel cataphracts (armored cavalry), chariots, and/or field artillery, which the Danoans sometimes mounted on shell-backed beasts, The troop types in each legion varied considerably from the civil conflicts of the late Fourth Epoch onward.
