Annals: Year 12
A story fragment and a codex entry from the Dustsong Cycle—and more!
From the Annals of the Vaporous Realms
In his seventh year, the boy Sceg climbed the slope behind his kin-folk's hollow. As he spied upon a crag-goat, the voice of the Wright first called to him across the divide betwixt the realms.
Codex: Unseen Realm
The unseen realm was the plane of being on which the Wright built the earth. Though invisible to earthly beings in most circumstances, the unseen realm existed alongside and intertwined with their world. The primary inhabitants of the unseen realm were spirit-folk, whether chaotic or heavenly in origin, whenever they ventured upon the earth.
Author Note
Here’s the weekly run-down and recommendations from the Vaporous Realms!
The tabletop profile for Len is updated with the revised, simplified Vaporous Realms at War stats and details.
To my chagrin, I’ve discovered that for a while now, I’ve unwittingly been “liking” others’ Substack posts and stories from a different account. I’ll rectify the error in part with a few recommendations from recent weeks:
A. K. Preston’s ongoing Helm of Seven series of story snippets for young and old alike.
Michael John Petty’s new Honor Thy Father serial from his Bear-tooth Mountain Archive setting.
Amanda Auler’s Substack debut, where you can keep updated on the imminent third installment of her Mothmar Trilogy and its Kickstarter launch. I think of it loosely as Ice Age Harry Potter (with a female lead)—but more mystical, less “magical.” Good stuff.
Eric Falden and Clifford Stumme’s series on Tolkien’s “On Fairy-Stories.”
All sorts of posts by The Man Behind the Screen, including his serialized novella The Jarl’s Son.
The Bros. Krynn’s essay on the moral and spiritual aspects of the Luke vs. Vader duel from Return of the Jedi.
I’m spiffing up Zshurii’s serial this month to share, possibly, in response to the Warrior Wednesday prompt for November here on Substack.
Two weeks until our biggest event of the fall! If you live near enough to Richmond, Va., consider coming by the Raceway on November 23 for the VA Comicon.
In the meantime, happy reading, y’all!
